Enter With Determination as Strong as Your Body
Ripped, Strong, Gorgeous, Healthy, Inspiring…Yes, that is what I think of when I catch Obi Obadike’s or Jamie Eason’s incredible statures staring at me from the neighboring magazine rack as I pay for my groceries. For many, these beautiful faces and physiques flashing in front of them are what inspires them to venture to the gym after a grueling day at work, when they’d much rather be plopped on the couch eating ice cream every night. For me, these fitness personalities are my motivation to take my fitness profession in a bigger and brighter audience.
My full-time job is to take people like you to a level of physicality that you can’t get to on your own. Yes. I am a “Fitness Professional”… Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Club Manager, Fitness Show Competitor, Exercise Addict, just to name a few of my fancy titles! All joking aside, I am so lucky and blessed to have a job that I love, a career that allows me to motivate and inspire others to be their most powerful and best, and an occupation that keeps me feeling stronger and younger than I did the year before.
How does someone like me who exudes every breath of fitness, 365 days-a -year, have the opportunity to be a role model for more that those I come in contact with everyday? Can my body glisten on those glossy magazines like Obi’s and Jamie’s as you stroll through the overstuffed racks at the bookstore? Where do I begin? How can I catch the attention of the decision makers who sort though hundreds of photo submissions of people every day? Is it possible to join the ranks of these incredible stars? Can someone pinch me please?!!
Well, my gym walls are forever too small since meeting Mr. Clark Bartram and Gary Augustine Warren, co-founders of Fitness Model International, the newest and best organization to help educate and promote fitness professionals who want to catapult into the mainstream fitness media. And yes, I can officially thank them for giving me a new job title to add to my list: “Aspiring Fitness Model and Personality” since attending The 2009 Fitness Model International Conference this past weekend in Redondo Beach, CA.
Day 1 at FMI Conference: Visualize me and 29 other aspiring fitness professionals sitting in the conference room as we are literally “blown-away” by Clark, who famously exploded his fitness modeling career into the Clark Bartram brand we all know and respect today. Not only does he have a better physique that most 22-year-olds, but has the most infectious personality to go along with it.
Clark and Gary ushered me to photo shoots at the FMI conference with some of the best and most talented fitness photographers and stylists in the industry today. I eagerly scribbled my pen on my notebook, absorbing as much information as I could at invaluable workshops presented by top fitness managers, agents and decision makers from across the country.
After meeting some of the biggest fitness models in the arena today, Max, Amber, Rebecca, Obi…and of course, Clark, I have quickly learned that I need to push the industry as hard as I push my body in the gym. Carb-cutting before my shows, drop-setting in the gym, nailing those last plyos as my heart pounds out of my chest will now be matched by strong girl, eager to make a name for herself in the big world!
I have learned that I more than just a body, I am more than just a trainer, instructor and fitness enthusiast. I am Lisa Robins and I am a brand! I need to run my little, fit body like a big company, a well-oiled machine that is ready to knock on doors with a vengeance and knock politely again, again and again until you remember me. I have to be quick, organized and enthusiastic. I have to be able to take rejection, keep positive and stay focused. I have to be confident, but not cocky. I have to be fit, lean, strong, healthy and smart…I have to be me!
One more question as I sit at my computer typing away…It ‘s Saturday night at 11:14pm. Clark, Why am I working now?
