Wasted Money

Clark Bartram's picture

Honestly, my following comments have absolutely nothing to do with who is in office, but more to do with the "State of the Union"

When everyone was battling it out to get a seat in the oval office the economy was an area of discussion. "we will cut here to save money" "we will do our best to trim the deficit" so on and so forth.

I was just watching the news and found it rather disturbing when I heard that it may cost close to 150 million to host this  "inaugural party". Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce, U2 just to name a few are all a part of an event that will cost more than any inauguration to date.

Who cares if the inaugural committee raised close to 40 million, we still have a crisis on our hands and if our new President was really ready to "get to work" he should just get to work!

They can spin it all they want and say that it is a celebration of or "common values" but the bottom line is they are going to have to pay for more security than ever before, fund concerts and dinners, and throw money down the drain.

Again, it could be anyone, Democrat, Republican, Black, White, Red or Brown, the new President should make a statement by saying, "no parties this year, I' have a Country in need and I'm serious about getting the job done.

Rationalize, argue, debate all you want but if it were me, I would say let's save the party when we get this great country of ours back on track! if I were an advisor to the President I would tell him the same thing and I can absolutely guarantee that would get all Americans "United"  and that would be a common value worth more than anything right now.

Take all the donations, funds that were raised and everyone donate an hour of public service and put it to the streets. Get people united to help our industry, businesses and families starting with the ones who need it the most...not the ones who lost things by living beyond their means but the ones who have tried, worked hard and just can't seem to rise above whatever it is that has been holding them down.

How cool would it be if President Obama said, "Forget the parties, I've got work to do. I'm asking every American to help me, let's use the money designated for my inaugural party and pour it back into our economy, I know that 150 million isn't much in comparison to what is going on today, but I'm not going to waste one second or one dime"!

This country would light up with enthusiasm, hope and respect for a man who is really putting his campaign promises to work...right away!

I know this isn't typical for me, but this is the way I feel. I remind you...it has nothing at all to do with who is in office,  the color of anyone's skin or any party affiliation. So, if you want to rebuttal this don't come at me with any of that!

All comments are welcomed, I want to hear your feelings on this.

Politicians Aren't Worried

Jonah_Maddox's picture

It is frustrating to see our leaders living lavishly when our country is supposed to be in the hardest financial recession since the Great Depression. The reason why our politicians and super stars don't change their way of living, spending, or donating is because it's not directly affecting them. They aren't having a hard time making their mortgage payment after the interest rate jumped and they might have lost a little "chump change" in stocks but their entire life savings wasn't depleted. It is sad that thousands are being laid off at this very moment but millions of dollars can be used to fund a party. Hopefully Obama comes through on his promises and actually brings hope to this country, if not he will just be another politician.

Agree but also disagree

While I understand the dismay over the cost of the "parties" in the grand scheme of it all I don't think its a waste of money. 150 million is nothing compared to what has been blown in the last 8 years. Also due to the historic nature of this inauguration and the "bad feelings" people have towards what has happened these past 8 years I feel that in some ways this is needed. People are hurting real bad and things are not looking real good, at least in the short term so spending 150 million is nothing. Also I do not understand why you say " if our new President was really ready to "get to work" he should just get to work! " What do you think he has been doing since the election? I must say I have been very impressed with what he HAS been doing since the election. Sure he has been picking his cabinet BUT he has been engaged with the economy and what to do about it. And he is doing this before he has been inaugurated! He sure is doing a lot more than the one who is handing off this mess to him. I for one was not sure about this guy at all but from what he doing now is any indication of what is to come I for one am very confident that we are in capable hands....I am grateful there is a possibility that I can once again be proud of of being an American something I was not for a very long time. Guess I jumped on the soapbox here but I feel very passionately about how far this country has gone off course in a lot of areas....I truly hope we move back to some semblance of sanity again....thank you.....

Thanks for the feedback

That is what makes this America I guess. I do appreciate the fact that he did get to work right away, after the parties and wasting 150 million. His comments actually did start off 'kill joy and damp" if you ask me.
You won't find a more positive and upbeat person than me, I can promise you that, but I still think most of that money could have went to better use and I 100% disagree with the comparison to small companies earning that much in a year. His whole campaign was centered around the little guy, the families that are struggling. Don't you think that investing into some of those would have sent a POSITIVE message to the world. Blowing money is what got the US into the mess it is in right now.

I know what you are saying, but frankly I think you are asking too much. This IS a historical occasion and as John Riccio's vid will no doubt show me (gonna watch it in a minute), every day that can be enjoyed and celebrated should be. You really wanted more than 2 billion people in the world to tune in and watch a kill-joy damp squib of an occasion to save what basically amounts to pennies bearing in mind your actual trillions worth of deficits?
$150 million? Come on...that isn't even a good years earning for most top line American companies. What is that for a country to celebrate something that people will be talking about in centuries to come?

And by the way the pomp and celebration and presentation to the whole world IS the President 'getting to work'. That is part of his job or should he just put an end to all the pageantry stuff and take a taxi to work? When visiting dignitaries come he should just ask them to budge up in a cab, 'if we all hold our breaths we'll all fit in.' No, that would be a pointless symbolic gesture that people would also attack for being a pointless symbolic gesture that saves pennies.

I suspect in the same way the First Lady did not share the same kind of dress budget as Sarah Palin that once things settle in they will indeed not undertake the same sort of spend associated with Presidential events - but give the guy a break sheeeesh!

wasted money!

clark buddy you must be psychic! i was thinking the same exact thing!

forget parties, and for the time being forget the "historical" implications of his presidency. 150 million? this could truly help people truly in need and like you said not the ones who lived beyond their means, while i feel bad for these people, there is such a thing called personal responsibility and being intelligent with what you can and can't have. if they are helped they should be towards the end of the line.

in a way, i think all this "pomp and circumstance" reminds me of (oh, i hope i dont' offend anyone here but here it goes ....) the pope living in a palatial gold palace. i mean seriously does the pope need to live in such a over the top place? couldn't the money used for keeping this place in "ahem, glorious shape" be used to help the poor christian or not around the world?

i don't think if Jesus was around he would expect his popes to live in such ostentatious palaces! It's like people who even though they are filthy rich, buying 10 cars at 75,000 to 100,000 thousand dollars each! i mean yes, we all want nice things but think of all the people who could be helped with the money you just spent on a metal and steel transporation device like a car! regardless if you could/can afford it or think you've earned it! (i.e. the pro baseball player who actually believes and thinks he is worth 150 million dollar contract because he can hit a ball and throw it better than others on this planet, when at the end of the day it's still "just hitting and throwing a ball" not curing cancer, not curing other ills of society whether physical or mental.

i do give kudos for obama to plan on working today the very next day after his inauguration, but what a great and fantastic sign it would have been if he had said what you more or less said clark " this celebration of the presidency will and should start with the celebration of my work which will start now!"

of course what would the media and the public do if no parade, no parties to read about and watch on tv, etcetera, etcetera. and not to mention the "so called important people of our time, celebrities have to get their attention fix"

150 million may be a drop in the bucket ( imagine that much being a drop?!) but i'm sure a foundation, organization, non-profit, health center, job creation, mental health, veteran's hospital and more could have surely needed this party fund!

AND I'M SPENT! LAWRENCE

I agree with your comments

daisy's picture

I agree with your comments on the church., but the ceremony is a one off and judging by the numbers in attendance MORE people would have been disappointed in a damp squib inauguration than not. Life is about hope and enjoyment not just about grim work schedules.

hrm

will_i_am's picture

I see your point, but it doesnt matter really. what anyone feels. They would quickly get over it, much more so than we would "quickly" make 150 million back... THROUGH tax dollars

I agree..
