Tips To Get Work
- You got to have great pictures in your portfolio to make editors take notice of you and give you a chance for a shoot.
- Network with some of the top fitness cover people at the Expos and find out what they did to get on the cover of a magazine.
- Make friends with as many fitness people as you can because someone always knows somebody in this business that may want to hire you.
- Always be in shape. The difference between a working fitness model and fitness model that works once a year is the fact that the fitness model that is always working is the person that is ready to shoot at a moment's notice. Editors and photographers don't have time to wait for a month for you to be in shape. Sometimes you'll be lucky if you get a 48 hour notice. When I first shot for Maximum Fitness back in April of 2008, photographer Robert Reif called me and said he had a two issue spread for me and he needed to shoot me in 2 days. Fortunately for me I was ripped up and in shape to shoot for him.
- Be prepared to spend money on acquiring great pictures. If you want great pictures you will have to spend some money especially if you want shoot with published photographers. If no one knows who you are and you haven't done anything, please don't expect a photographer to shoot you for TFP, (Trade For Prints).
- Buy Clark Bartram's book called "You Too Can Be A Fitness Model". Everything I am saying is really in his book and it really gives you a step by step process of what to do and how to get work. It is an incredibly motivating book that has helped me tremendously.
- Believe in yourself! I don't want insult anyone but there are many people that have been on covers that didn't have the classical ripped up male physique or classical toned female body or didn't have the classical handsome face or pretty female face. You have to understand that one editor may not like your look while another editor may love your look. There are many people that fall through the cracks that have gotten covers and in my modest opinion shouldn't have gotten that opportunity. So understand that there is a magazine out there that will hopefully appreciate your look and physique. Research the magazines out there that have had models that may mirror your look. This will help you before you start sending your pictures to these magazines.
- When emailing pictures to magazines, the person you want to send your pictures to is the editor of the magazine. Make sure the pictures are sent via FedEx because it is very professional and they will open it if it is sent in a FedEx package. The cover photographer's name is also on the inside cover of a fitness magazine. If you are interested in shooting with that cover photographer, which is what I would advise you to do, then Google that cover photographer's name and find their email address and email them saying that you are interested in shooting with him or her.
I hope this helps anybody that has asked me for help.

Thanks Gary!
I am glad you liked it. I've had quite a bit of fitness models message me that they like this article.
