What are you trying to do to me here? How am I supposed to be PC and answer this one?
Let me say this: Like many generalizations, there’s an element of truth to the notion that bodybuilders are short on athletic skills that require stretching, moving, and hand-eye coordination. The reason is simple: in their quest for size and strength, many bodybuilders neglect specific training protocols that could make them more athletic.
On the other hand, because strength is important for athletes, bodybuilders have a solid foundation of conditioning from which they can improve their athleticism, and I’ve seen some very athletic bodybuilders over the years. Many have made solid transitions into “sports entertainment” or otherwise known as wrestling. Now those guys are athletes!
It really comes down to two things however: practice and natural ability. Frankly, whether or not someone “body builds” really has nothing to do with whether or not he or she is an athlete. Even when I was at my biggest, I was still able to throw a football and hold my own in a game of hoops. But that was because sports came second nature to me since I was a little kid.
If you want to improve your athleticism, I recommend exploring some other activities that can round out your bodybuilding program. Personally, I’m starting to get into jujitsu because I’m getting tired of just lifting weights every day, and trust me being strong and having a solid core really helps.
I’m also looking into adventure sports and other outdoor activities like kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, white water rafting, and things like that. There are companies that specialize in tours for these activities, where you can travel almost anywhere in the world and do really exciting things like rope courses, dog sledding, backpacking, road bike tours ,and a ton of other really cool activities.
If you’ve read any of my articles in the past you’ll know that I’m all about keeping things simple, fun, and challenging, but that doesn’t mean that fitness has to be single dimensional. That is exactly why I’m suggesting you get outside of the gym and try some of the other options that are available anywhere in the country and don’t necessarily have to cost much.
You might also try participating in a team sport. Bodybuilding can be a pretty solitary endeavor, and the ability to work as part of a team is important for true athletes. You could join a basketball, volleyball or ice hockey league. Or, you could hire a coach and practice fundamentals. Lots of gyms today offer leagues and lessons that can help you become more athletic.
And once you do all that, challenge your friend to an athletic contest. That’ll settle the score and prove to him that bodybuilders, namely you, can be extremely athletic.
Hopefully I answered that with enough tact and respect for the thousands of wonderfully gifted bodybuilders that have supported Max Muscle over the years, because anyone who gives one hundred percent to any pursuit to become healthier is truly an athlete in their own right.

Great Response! Well put. I must agree that bodybuilders are definitely athletes on some level. Physiologically there is a draw back. When you focus on size you over develop those type two muscle fibers at the cost of type one endurance fibers. I personally couldn't give that up so I quit the bodybuilding and went for total body fitness. I am not as big as I was but I am still stronger than most and I can go for hours in any of my chosen sports. Its a trade off. You bodybuilders are great athletes and will kick my butt in the short game but I'll get you in the later rounds.
