I’ve been fortunate as a former athlete to have competed and trained with some of the best athletes in the world and what I’ve found through my experiences is that these athletes never shied away from pain. That is a part of what made these athletes so great. I come from an athletic and training background where it was instilled in my head that with no pain there is no gain. I absolutely believe that this concept is very true.
Too many people (and I am talking about both men and women) stop their set right when they start to feel the burn in the muscle they are exercising. Your workout doesn’t start at rep 1, it starts once you feel that burn. I had a coach that used to tell me when I was fatigued and in pain in practice, “this is when the workout starts”. I’ve never forgotten those words and I take those words with me every time I train. Remember pain is just a temporary thing and it is not going to kill you. In fact, you will experience greater muscle growth and burn more calories throughout the day if you can work through that burn and pain and execute that set properly.
I have a male friend that whenever he is doing bicep curls, or any other exercise for that matter, stops the set as soon as he feels that sharp burn. And many times that set is stopped at rep 5. Sometimes I will ask him, “What are you doing?” And his reply is, “I can’t do any more because I was starting feeling a burn.” This is the same guy that wonders why his body has always looked the same and has never improved. The reason is because he has always trained that way and has never made more of an effort other than that.
You can’t possibly think you’re going to make any positive physical improvements training like that. I have another friend who is a female who I used to train, but I stopped training her because I honestly felt it was a waste of time; she wouldn’t work hard for me in the gym and, to be honest, was really lazy. She would be working out while talking on her cell phone the whole time. If you can talk on your phone while working out, then you haven’t done anything and you really aren’t doing anything.
The best way to monitor if you are working a muscle properly is if you are feeling a burn in the muscle. For the people who stop once they feel that burn, you truly are limiting your maximum muscle growth. My advice is don’t give into the burn; try to work through the burn and if you consistently think this in your mind when exercising, I can guarantee you will make more positive growth physically because you have maximized the muscle. This will allow you to burn more calories throughout the day as well. When is there no pain there really is no gain.

Gotta be honest. It doesn't matter how much time I spend in the gym, I never really feel that burn in any part of the body like I do in the quads during leg extensions. Most other body parts, I just get fatigued and can't lift anymore.
If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time..

Burn baby Burn
I have heard people discuss this issue so often and I am not sure there is a "right" answer. So often genetics play a HUGE part in peoples training. Not everyone will have a tiny waist, and the ability to have razor sharp cuts if there genetics will not allow it. Training longer or harder or using a different method will not change what God gave you! Also, just because your muscles are feeling the burn during an exercise does not mean they are growing. A pump is caused when blood rushes into the muscle faster than it can be removed. The burn is caused by toxins like lactic acid accumulating faster than they can be flushed out. You can flex your arm with no weight at all continuously and cause a burn to happen! Muscle growth happens when you break the muscle down by fatiguing the muscle by using proper form and weight. In time as you increase the stress on the muscle it adapts to the workload on it and grows. Getting "the burn" is not the answer to muscle growth as lactic acid is stored in muscle groups that are used often, once the burn is completed it doesn't mean the following day that muscle will be sore from training, it just means the toxins have been flushed! I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv, but I hope this will shed some light on the subject.

Great information Fitnessoneonone! I still believe that you will make more muscle growth and be able to maximize your exercise if you can fight through that temporary pain as it relates to sports peformance training. I use myself as a great example. I generally will do bicep curls with 45, 50 to 55 pounds. Well when I am doing 55 pound dumbbell weights I generally start to feel a burn in my bicep at rep 5. If I stop at rep 5 because I am feeling a burn, then I just stopped my training and minimized the growth I could have made because I felt a little pain as opposed to fighting through that burn and pushing through that temporary pain.
There have been many times where I pushed through rep 5 when I felt like stopping and got to rep 9 or 10. That is because I ignored the burn and fought through it. Most people feel the burn and they stop right away. It is the same with sports training when you are doing quarter mile sprints. After the third quarter mile you want to stop because the lactic acid has built up in your legs. You can push through this pain as many successful athletes have and maximimize your workout as opposed to giving in to the pain.
My point being with no pain no gain is don't give in to the pain. Try to fight through the burn because you will maximize that particular exercise or workout because you have the mental ability to fight through it. The philosophy is incredibly old school and has been used for many years by coaches all over the world and it has been the single most important thing that has made me a successful extremely fit athlete.
