When you set a goal for yourself, you have to truly want it and be ready to commit to it. You have to be willing to make sacrifices, put in hours of hard work, and be so focused on your goal that nothing is going to stand in your way from reaching it. Why do so many people set goals and then give up on them when they haven't seen results after only a couple weeks? Why do those same people also go after their goals with only 50 percent effort and expect to receive results?
Think about large accomplishments,goals, and milestones you have reached in your life. I can guarantee you that they didn't happen overnight. Whether it was graduating college, earning a certification, having a baby,losing weight, gaining muscle, or working at a friendship or relationship, they all took two of my favorite T words: Time and Tenacity.
What does it mean to be tenacious? Webster dictionary defines it as:
" persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired "
Expecting to reach any goal in life without being tenacious is like expecting to reach a fitness goal without proper nutrition and exercise. I pride myself on tenacity. What does tenacity mean to me?
I just took my last final exam and can now say I have my Bachelors of Science in Exercise and Wellness from Arizona State University. Four years ago if you would have told me I would be graduating from my home state school , I would not have believed you for a second. But how did I end up here? Time and Tenacity.
Growing up, soccer was my life. I put all my time outside of school toward it and I was dedicated in receiving a scholarship to play for a D1 school in college. Through hard work over time and my tenacious mindset I received many offers. As I mentioned before in a previous blog, I played at university of oregon before transferring and playing at Mizzou where I suffered a career ending knee injury. At that point, I had two choices.
1. To sit and sulk and think "poor me" and let the rest of my college years go to waste
2. Set new goals for myself and go after them with all my effort and tenacity
I chose number two, and over the timeframe of the past two years my life has changed drastically. I came back to my hometown school of ASU at the start of my Junior year of college. Being that it was my third university in three years, they told me it was almost impossible for me to graduate on time. Many of my classes from both Oregon and Mizzou did not transfer, and I was going to be looking at five years instead of four. However, I was determined to graduate in four years. I knew it was going to take a lot of hard work, but I wanted it and was determined to make it happen. Junior year finished and I was told there was no way to graduate on time because I also needed to complete an internship after all my classes that HAD TO BE a capstone internship.
In my case, I was already ahead of the game. Immediately after leaving Mizzou I started an Internship at the world renown Athletes' Performance the week I got back to Arizona. If I couldn't be an athlete anymore, I wanted to apply my passion for sports and learn how to train other athletes to make them better. I completed over 700 hours before even starting my Junior Year. In addition, I spent the entire summer of 2009 in Orlando Florida Training Athletes at Spectrum Sports Performance completing a second internship. So when ASU was telling me I needed to do an internship for 300 hours when I already completed close to 1500 hours, I put up a fight and I fought with every ounce of tenacity I had in my body. My department was not going to let me graduate because I would still have to do it as a capstone. So basically I was being punished because I was ahead of the game. They had never had a student with my circumstances before, so they told me no without even giving it a second thought. However, I didn't take no for an answer.
I petitioned and wrote a very lengthy letter explaining why I should not have to do a THIRD internship as a capstone, which would limit me from starting my career and moving to LA. Again they said no, they have never changed the rules for anyone, why should they change them for me? What ASU didn't know was the amount of persistence and tenacity I was going to hit them with until they said yes. Finally, ASU decided to compromise with me. I know it was because they got sick of me being so persistent and not giving up on the issue. ASU ended up allowing me to go back to Athletes Performance for a short period of 150 hours at the same time as my semester courses. This was something that was strictly against the rules for our program. In my program description it says" You must have all courses complete before receiving internship credit. Absolutely no excuses will be made. "
Well, seems as if I proved ASU wrong. Over time, my tenacity and willingness to fight for what I wanted got the head of my department to make " an exception" for me. I am not writing this by any means to brag that I got a University to change the rules for me, I am writing it to prove a point.
Tenacity and having a tenacious mindset and attitude will help you reach your goals no matter what they may be. Give it time, and your persistence in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something you value or desire WILL PAY OFF!
