Training with Rachel Q&A: Running hurts my knees, so how do I reach my fitness goals?!

RachelElizabeth's picture

I was recently asked this question by an old acquaintance. I know it's a common issue so I decided to share it, blog style! :)

Q:

What exercise would you recommend to someone who loves to run but can't very often because it hurts their knees? She is getting married in the fall and wants to shape up and running just isn't working for her anymore. Any help would be appreciated! : )

A:

First of all, ask yourself: do my running shoes support my feet correctly?? How old are they? -You need new running shoes at least every 6 months.

Make sure you're stretching daily! (Hamstrings, Glutes, Quads, Calves and Hip Flexors).

Drink at least 4-5 liters of water to prevent dehydrating and so preventing cramping.

If running is still bothering your knees, and you don't have a serious runner's goal like a marathon or triathlon, switch to low impact, long distance exercise like: uphill walking, stepmill, etc. for at least 30 min, 3x week.

Lastly, for change in body composition (fat loss/muscle gain/etc), remember that getting your nutrition dialed in is the number one most important factor to those goals!

Good luck!

And congrats on your engagement!!!
