This week has been very rocky for me. I’ve dealt with more frustration and heartache than I’d like. My grandfather passed away on Tuesday and my car was hit in a grocery store parking lot with no note of any kind. When situations like this in the past have occurred for me, I used to find myself questioning “why me.” I made up my mind at the beginning of this month that I was going to look at any negative situation that occurs in my life with a positive outlook.
When I received the phone call from my mom on Tuesday morning, letting me know my grandfather had passed away unexpectedly I was in shock. The week before Thanksgiving, I felt the urge to call my grandpa. Our conversations have never been long, but I was glad I took the time to talk with him. He had been dealing with some health issues and he was having a hard time looking at the positive in his life. He said he missed my grandma, but was thankful that no one could take his memories of her and the events that took place in his life away from him. The last humble piece of advice he offered me was to find a job I love, because I would never work a day in my life. He told me stories of when my dad and uncle were boys, stories he can remember when my brother and I were young and how he was thankful my grandma had encouraged him to better himself.
Later on Tuesday morning, I turned on Nickleback to the song “If today was your last day.” One of the first lyrics in the song is “each day is a gift and not a given right.” I thought about my grandfather’s passing and even though I was sad of his loss, I was happy because he was finally reunited in heaven with my grandma after nearly 13 years of being apart from her.
Yesterday when I discovered my car had been dented, I was frustrated because I’ve always tried to take good care of my possessions. I was having a difficult time seeing the positive with this event. I put myself in a mindset of gratitude when I got home, I had time to listen to music and relax during my much needed workout. I was grateful that the accident with my car was minor, no one had gotten hurt, and chances are the dent can be easily fixed. I continued to think more about what else I was grateful for. I was grateful that my car still worked, I was grateful for my health, my physical well being, and my family and being able to lean on them for support.
This morning I made up my mind I was going to put myself in an “attitude of gratitude” and I’ve felt at peace. I was able to notice the beauty of life around me, the smile of a child, the sunshine, the crisp morning air, and the company of a good friend and FMI alumni Rachel Elizabeth Murry. It was nice to catch up over coffee and have some girl talk.
My point to this whole blog is this: We all take the little things in life for granted without even realizing it. When a negative situation happens in our lives, all we can see is the negative and the frustration. The next time your not having the best week or day, look for the simple joys in life to put a smile on your face. Even when you're working out and listening to your music think about the small significant joys that put you in a better mood and frame of mind.
My challenge to each and every one of you is to sit down once a day and think of at least five things your grateful for, look beyond materialistic items. I guarantee your perspective about your day will change. I challenge you to go out tomorrow and find your attitude of gratitude. ☺
