Obi Completes Masters Degree in 14 months

Obi Obadike's picture

I started this journey of going to back to getting my Masters Degree in November of 2007 a couple months removed from finishing my 2nd Bachelor’s degree. In many ways I can’t believe I am finally done with this. There were so many times that I wanted to quit and got very close because of the stress of multi-tasking too many things in 2008.

2008 was by far the most stressful time of my life working 50 + hours a week; tirelessly working hard to make a name for myself in the fitness industry with photo shoots, competitions, etc; dealing with the personal stress of a younger brother who recently became seriously mentally ill and who has completely lost his identity of he is and who his family is; Also dealing with the stress of having to consistently make financial and medical decisions of his welfare constantly. On top of all that trying to find the time and at times the sanity to study and maintain good grades in grad school.

The sacrifices that were made in attaining this Masters degree with what I had going on in my life was virtually almost no social life in 2008. I am sharing this journey of mine because I know we all go through obstacles in our lives that can prevent us from accomplishing a goal we set out to do. I use my experience as the perfect example that if you put your mind to a goal or something you want to seriously accomplish despite what you’re going through I guarantee that you can accomplish what you set out to do. Trust me when I tell you this there were so many things that told me to quit school and that I have too much on my plate.

I totally believe that the mind is a powerful thing and you can will yourself to do almost anything in this world. If this message or my experience helps out at least one person in an inspirational way than sharing my story and experience was worth it. I want to thank my mother and father who set the bar so high for me in terms of education.

My father who has a PHD and my mother who has her Masters degree. I love both of them dearly and thank them for teaching me that you’re nothing without your education. On a positive note I will graduate July 11th, 2009 with honors with my Masters degree in Information Systems in Phoenix, Arizona from University Of Phoenix. What an incredible 14 month rollercoaster journey that was and now I can finally breathe…smile.

Obi,
Awesome story! Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us. From someone who is not a bodybuilder, I really do enjoy reading more about the life experiences of extraordinary people like you and Clark. You've given your readers another gift...a gift of hope and encouragement that all of us have within us the ability to accomplish great things, and each of us can make our own dreams a reality. It also really helps to have the support of loved ones and the community around you during the times we want to quit. Getting your Masters Degree with all of lifes other demands tugging at your heart, your time and you wallet, makes it doubly tough. Sounds like you have a wonderful family...Kudo's to mom and dad too!

Thank You

Obi,
As a former elementary and secondary teacher/coach, and a father of five, I can honestly tell you that your lifestory will be an encouragement to anyone who has the privilege of reading it or hearing it from you. My hope is that we can find the way to get it out to as many young folks as possible. Young people around the world will have no problem recognizing the hard work and commitment it took to get where you are at today. Guys like you and Clark are true warriors of our day in every sense of the word and kids desperately need such positive role models. Stay the course and keep giving!
