"Don't put an age limit on your dreams"

is the mantra for Olympic Silver Medalist Dara Torres. I love that statement and I love the fact that a 41 year old woman put a whoopin on a field of athletes that could have all been her daughters, especially the 16 year old a few lanes over.
The stories coming out of this years Olympics are all awesome, from Michael Phelps winning eight golds, The Jamaican sprinter Usain (Lightning) Bolt smashing the world record while jogging across the finish line (show untied and all) to several bad calls in gymnastics. The fact that ties all of these stories together is that  every one of these athletes dreamed of one day competeing in their sport, representing their country and standing on the podium.
"Don't put an age limit on your dreams." I encourage you to listen to the words of Dara Torres as she could have easily decided not to enter the 100 meter sprint in the 2008 Olympics. I'm sure that many people (all naysayers) told her things like, "you're too old' "what are you thinking" "you'll get crushed by those kids" and many other defeatist statements that the masses so easily sling around. Thank God she didn't listen, not only is she a fine example, of what is possible, to her young child but she is to me and the rest of the civilized world.
Have you put an age limit on your dreams? Do you think it's too late for you to accomplish your fitness and life goals? Have you thrown in the towel? Well if you have I'm asking you to walk in and pick it up...it's never too late. You have the same abilities as Dara Torres, she just learned to develop hers. That is the difference between a world class athlete and someone who cannot seem to get "over the hump." First the DECISION, "I think I want to do the 2008 Olympic 100 meter sprint!" is what she said to herself one day.
Then I'm sure some doubt, maybe even a little fear crept in, but she made her DECISION! That is what I'm asking you to do today, make your DECISION. Then it came time to train to compete against girls who are 25 years younger than her so she to put that DECISION into ACTION and jumped in the pool and starting her training program. Of course she was already a world class sprinter, but the DECISION and ACTION are still required.
I could continue on and on and give you examples of people who beat the odds and succeed even in the face of fear and doubt, but that isn't necessary as I'm sure you get it.
Do yourself a favor today and be a person of DECISION and ACTION and don't ever put an age limit on your dreams!

That's so true. Too many

Keith Cormican's picture

That's so true. Too many people use age as an excuse not to do something. Some people have a belief system which says, "Im too old". Could they not instead say, "My experience & wisdom puts me ahead of the game"? That's a great place to be - "ahead of the game". Some others' belief system is "I'm too young." & they worry about not having enough experience. Couldn't they instead say, "My innocence, passion & vibrancy will help me to achieve anything I put my mind to"? Surely that's more empowering than "I'm too young".
I honestly do feel that it is how we choose to see the world & it's many challenges & oppertunities that ultimately shapes us.

Gymnastics Medalist

Oksana Chusovitina of Germany would be another great example. She shattered the perception of being "washed up" at age 33, bringing Germany a Silver medal in the Women's Vault. In a sport where 18 is starting to be considered over the hill, she shattered that myth in style on Sunday.
